Contact Calton Weavers

THE CALTON WEAVERS’ STRIKE of 1787 was the earliest major industrial dispute in Scottish history. At the behest of the then city fathers, troops fired on the weavers killing six; they became Scotland’s first working-class martyrs.

Each year since 2023, the Calton Weavers Commemoration Committee (CWCC) has organised a lively, well attended event that is now a firm fixture in Glasgow’s Trade Union calendar.

The CWCC was established to promote and commemorate the memory of Glasgow’s working class martyrs. To do this, we would encourage you to join as an individual – and if you’re in a trade union, encourage them to affiliate to allow us to plan future events and other projects related to the Weavers
